Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best material for a memorial marker?
Today, cemetery memorials and markers are most often made of granite, marble, or bronze. However, granite is usually considered the best option for a number of reasons. Natural granite provides a wide range of color options, including pinks, reds, blues, grays, and blacks. Granite, when compared to other headstone materials, is much harder and more dense allowing for greater durability, making it the most reliable material for a memorial that stands the test of time.

Is a certain color of granite better than others?
When it comes to working with granite, you have a rainbow of colors to select from; with both domestic and international colors available. At times, the decision of color can be dictated by your choice of lettering or amount of artwork. Monuments to display portraits or large, detailed landscape etchings require high contrast in order to have the best outcome. In those situations, it is recommended to use a very dark granite. However, in most cases, the decision of granite color comes down to personal preference.

Does weather change the appearance of granite?
Rain can change the appearance of your granite, though for hard granites it is a temporary change. Hard granites retain less moisture and dry out quicker, though they are usually higher quality and more expensive. Soft granites retain more moisture and dry out slower. Soft granites can change in appearance over a period of time due to the moisture they retain sometimes leaving a faded spot or highlighted area.

Is a memorial possible if the person is cremated?
Absolutely. A memorial provides a place for loved ones to reflect on the life lived by that person, allowing a place to leave flowers, and other mementos on the grave site - as well as providing future generations a site to visit for genealogical information.
If burial is in a cemetery, most have regulations which require that the grave is marked with a memorial.
